Issey Miyake Fragrances Review: Classy L’Eau D’Issey

L’Eau D’Issey, the fragrance from the Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake, is one of the most distinguished and refreshing women’s fragrances to come along in recent years. Like all of Issey Miyake’s clothing lines, it’s classy, cosmopolitan, and international in design and spirit. And best of all, Issey Miyake fragrances never follow the fleeting styles of the season. This scent is innovative, imaginative, and a true leader in the business. In fact, many copycat perfumes have hit the market since L’Eau D’Issey’s release, but none of them have come close to matching this one in sheer soulfulness and complexity.

The scent is a very feminine, delicate, and soft fragrance that has a complex balance of fresh florals along with lotus and freesia. While it’s not too strong, if you’re not fond of scents that are too flowery, you might not be a fan of this one. However, it’s not the typical floral scent. One gets the impression that the creators of this scent put a lot of time and effort into finding a very specific balance that is not too familiar.

Like other Issey Miyake fragrances, this one gets better and better as the day progresses. To be honest, I would have to say that the first whiff is not exactly impressive, which may explain why it hasn’t been a big seller in the U.S., where people tend to have slightly more immediate tastes. At first, it smells a little dull and watery, but if you give it time to unfold, it comes to life, exploding into a soft mixture of delicately balanced elements.

In fact, if you apply this perfume in the morning, you’ll find that the scent lasts well into your day. By 1 p.m., it’ll still be going strong, but you may need a couple additional sprays by around 3 or so.

While Issey Miyake fragrances tend to be good for all different types of situations, I find that the L’Eau D’Issey seems best in casual venues. It’s great for an evening out on the town, and it also works fine for a long day of work—if your workplace is not too formal. 

Personally, I wouldn’t wear this scent of every day. But then again, the same is true of most perfumes. It’s best to use it no more than once every three or four days, so that you and the people around you don’t become too accustomed to the scent.

You can purchase L’Eau D’Issey anywhere where Issey Miyake fragrances are sold. This includes most major department stores. For example, you can usually find a bottle of it at Macy’s or any similar store.

However, my preferred method of buying this perfume is through the web. If you get it from Amazon, especially, you can typically get a nice discount when compared to store-bought bottles, and you can also choose from several different sizes. The mid-sized bottle, at $69.99 for 1.6 ounces, will last you a year or so with moderate usage, which makes it a great bargain.
