Sara Jessica Parker Perfume: Lovely, Covet, or Endless?
I’ve tried each of the Sara Jessica Parker perfumes as they’ve been released, and I’ve been
pleasantly surprised by each one. One of the best things about her fragrance line, particularly when compared to
the typical celebrity vanity project, is that they’re diverse. Parker clearly is not interested in releasing the
same fragrance each time out. She keeps challenging herself to do new things and to work with new people, which
shows a level of integrity that I find admirable. But more importantly, each of her fragrances is quite
wearable.
In fact, each Sara Jessica Parker perfume is worthy of a hearty recommendation, so it can be
hard to say which one is best, especially since they’re all so different.
Of course, it’s probably easiest to find her Endless perfume, as that’s the most recent one, meaning that stores are much
more likely to carry it. Created in collaboration with Yann Vanier of the Givaudan perfume company, it contains
easily identify top notes that include plum, pineapple, apple, and ivy. One layer below that, the middle notes
include jasmine, peony, and magnolia. Finally, the base notes are of patchouli, sandalwood, oak wood, and
musk.
While some reviewers have said that Endless is a bit too run-of-the-mill for their tastes, I
find that people with subtler noses are a little bit more impressed by it. It starts out strong, but gradually
develops more subtle complexity as you wear it. In fact, this is one of the rare perfumes that peaks after about
six hours of air exposure. It’s always nice when a perfume allows itself to unfold gradually rather than trying
so hard to make a big first impression.
The second most recent Sara Jessica Parker perfume was Covet. Covet also has a nice lasting power, but what really sets it apart is
its gender-spanning notes of greens, lemon, musk, vetiver, chocolate, and honeysuckle. As anyone familiar with
the fragrance industry knows, it’s extremely difficult to make a high-class scent that is great for both men and
women. Covet is not the most successful one ever created, but it does a good job nonetheless, especially for a
celebrity scent. In fact, most respected perfume reviewers agreed that Covet was by far the best celebrity
perfume release of 2007.
And going back to 2005, the very first Sara Jessica Parker perfume was Lovely. Although it is a great scent, you can tell that it’s a first effort.
For one, the name is less than inspiring. To me, the word “lovely” always sounds a little bit sarcastic,
especially when it’s not in any context. But fortunately, the name doesn’t have anything to do with the actual
scent, which is more-or-less fantastic. It has hints of mandarin, rosewood, apple, bergamot, orchid, amber,
woods, and musk.
The only downside to Lovely is that it comes on a bit too strong. Unlike Endless, Lovely does
try to make a big first impression. This is not always bad, but when it comes at the expense of longer-term
quality, it indicates a poorly designed perfume. Lovely doesn’t become unpleasant with time, but it does begin
to lose some of its character the longer it is exposed to the air. That’s why I recommend it much more for
evening outings that for day-long application. In any case, it’s still good.
