Sarah Jessica Parker Fragrance: A Truly High-Quality Celebrity Scent?
Sarah Jessica Parker’s been busy. As if acting in and producing numerous television and movies
projects weren’t enough, she’s also released three fragrances over the past four years. First, in 2005, there
was Lovely. Then, there was 2007’s Covet, and now we have the newest Sara Jessica Parker fragrance, Endless. I’m
often underwhelmed by the quality of these celebrity-created fragrance lines, but Parker’s fragrances are
exceptions. While they may not be among the truly great perfumes of recent years, they are complex, creative,
and natural, which is good enough.
Lovely: The first Sarah Jessica Parker fragrance,
Lovely was made in collaboration with Laurent Le Guernec and Clement Gavarry, both big names in the fragrance
business. Lovely was described as a “silky white amber” that had notes of rosewood, lavender, mandarin, apple,
patchouli, cedar, orchid, wood, and musk. That’s a lot of ingredients. And personally, I found it a bit stronger
than I expected given its light, clear appearance.
The initial smell is soft, woody, with hints of citrus, but once the musky and woody scents
kick in, it becomes a bit overpowering. I’m not saying it’s bad, however. Used in moderation, it’s quite
wearable, with many delicate and feminine subtleties.
Covet: Covet, the second Sarah Jessica Parker
fragrance, I found to be a bit more sophisticated than Lovely. It’s clear that Parker was developing more subtle
tastes and was interested in making a fragrance that would easily top her first release.
Covet dares to be for both sexes, but in reality it’s much more feminine, and I’m guessing
that the vast majority of its wearers are women. It has delicate notes of magnolia, honeysuckle, chocolate,
lemon, lavender, amber, and slight musk. Unlike Lovely, it starts out a little bit harsh and surprising, but it
settles into its complex subtlety after it’s been aired out a little bit.
All in all, it’s a very well done fragrance. It’s not one of those celebrity fragrances that
feels like nothing more than a vanity project. It’s clear that all of the creative minds behind this fragrance
were genuinely invested in making a high quality product.
Endless: Created with the help of perfume maker
Yann Vasnier of the Givaudan company, Endless is the Sarah Jessica Parker fragrance that I would most heartily
recommend. Not only is it the newest and most sophisticated, but it’s also warm, complex, and sophisticated
enough to go head to head with the top players in the business. I’m not saying it would win first prize, but it
would at least be somewhere in the running.
Endless has that special balance that many of the best perfumes have. It balances the
sweetness of its fruity and floral tones with a solid foundation of more robust scents like oak moss, suede, and
sandalwood. Personally, my favorite part is the mix of pineapple and magnolia that is immediately apparent when
you open the bottle, but which spreads out and gradually blends nicely with the other ingredients as time
unfolds.
